Jessica makes her TV debut

HOT ON the heels of an incredible amount of media attention including coverage in The Daily Telegraph, on Radio 2, on BBC Radio WM and on Pirate FM, Jessica Sweetman made her television debut at the age of 20 on the ITV regional news programme The Westcountry Tonight.

Reporter Kathy Wilshere came to Jessica's home in Cornwall and filmed her singing Angel Mine, the song that made her voice famous in Slovenia, followed by a touching acousitc duet on the sofa with her father, Mark Sweetman, of his original masterpiece The Best Day Of My Life.

As Jessica discovered what it was like being on camera - something she is going to have to get more and more used to as her fame spreads - she spoke, modestly, about the success and recognition that the Slovenian TV commercial for Mobitel has brought her.

The news item about Jessica, the final piece on the programme, included a summary of things Slovenia was famous for - and Jessica, according to the presenters, was one of those things.

Jessica Sweetman shoots to fame in Slovenia!

IT HAD to happen... and now it has. Jessica has become accidentally famous in Slovenia – thanks to a mobile phone company’s TV commercial that introduced her voice to millions of people.

Jessica, 20, recorded a song called Angel Mine for a firm that provides library music to the entertainment industry – and months later she was stunned to discover that the song, and her voice, was being heard on every national television and radio station in the Central European republic.

“The first I heard of it was when I received an e-mail from someone called Igor who said he loved the song and wanted to know if he could buy it,” said Jessica.

“I wasn’t sure what he was talking about, but I followed a link in his e-mail and discovered the song was being used as the backing track for a TV advert in a country I’d only vaguely heard of.

“This is an amazing break for me, and it’s incredible to think that people in a country I’ve never been to are trying to find out more about me and my music.”

The commercial for Mobitel, the country’s biggest mobile phone operator, was made by the advertising agency Publicis Slovenia, whose director Mitja Petrovic said it had been besieged with callers trying to find out who the distinctive voice behind the advert belonged to.

“We didn’t know Jessica before but we had a visual for the advertising campaign and wanted to find the right music to go with it,” he said.

“We could have used any famous singer on the planet, but when we heard Jessica’s voice we knew it was the perfect one.

“We’ve had a very strong response from Mobitel users wanting to know about the song and asking who the singer is.”

Thanks to the nationwide advertising campaign and the appearance of the video on Mobitel’s website, millions of people have Jessica’s voice on the brain – yet she has rarely played to audiences of more than a hundred here in the UK.

Since she performed Angel Mine, Jessica has been busy recording original songs by her songwriter father Mark Sweetman and has a growing repertoire that has yet to be heard by a single record company.

While she waits to be discovered in the UK, Jessica has put a video of her biggest potential hit, When It Comes To Love, on her website at www.jessicasweetman.com alongside a video of the advert that’s made her name in Slovenia.

Jessica, who lives in a cliffside house overlooking the sea in Seaton, Cornwall, has been repeatedly hailed as the next Katie Melua, Nora Jones, or Duffy.

“That’s all very flattering,” she said. “But I’m happy to be the first Jessica Sweetman.”
